Our Mission Statement

The Linux Chat Network is an online chat community for linux geeks, gurus and students to provide open communication, tech support, and other services to the linux community.

Our Project Rules

Anyone running some form of linux with a static IP address is encouraged to run their own server and become part of our chat network. You must run the IRCd we supply and be able to compile it (for help view the INSTALL file or find us on irc). Your irc server must be able to accept connections on ports 6665 to 6667.

Linking to our network requires that we put our trust in you. Abusive servers, administrators, or operators will be delinked or removed as necessary. Server administrators are expected to be active on their servers.

Round robin will only go to servers that can stay up 24/7. Scheduled downtime will not apply to this rule.

What's So Special About This Project?

The Linux Chat Network is unique because of the IRCd version we use. It is based on Hybrid-7 (used on EFnet) with special modifications like hostmasking (hiding your real host for anonymity and privacy), channel and nickname services, and many tools for the server admins.

It's also unique because we accept links from your home basement or home office. It's a good way to monitor your connectivity to the internet. Advanced admins could even write perl-based socket bots to output system information like logfile events or logins, or even icmp traffic. Ideally you could setup your own private channel and have a real-time heads up display of your network in operation.

Encrypted links are available if your linux operating system has OpenSSL.

The Linux Chat Network is a great place for linux users of all ages and expertise. If you don't know something, chances are pretty good someone else will.
